An essential element of college and career readiness is the ability to make sense of complex texts. But for many teachers, putting challenging books in their students’ hands can be a daunting prospect. When students struggle to make meaning, teachers can feel compelled to over-support their students, lower the rigor of associated thinking and writing tasks, or abandon complex texts altogether.
But research shows that there’s no substitute for doing cognitively demanding work with complex reading material. This course will teach you the skills and strategies necessary to support all students as they access and make meaning from challenging texts.
